Voluntary Opportunity in Nepal
Water Allocation & Conflicts – Kathmandu.We are looking for volunteers as for contribute to an exploratory work based on water allocation & conflict, in the area of the Bagmati basin - Kathmandu.
Project coordinator: Laurent Anstett : He is a water and sanitation engineer from the National School for Environment, Water and Sanitation Engineering. He is currently conducting a PhD in water resources management whose subject is “Conflicts, Governance and Water Resources Management in the Upper Bagmati river basin, Nepal”.
Context of intervention:This project suggests locating this approach in the upper basin of the Bagmati (Kathmandu). This basin is indeed representative of the growing water needs of urban areas at the expense of the agricultural sector, generating regular conflicts. In order to address this issue, the Asian Development Bank supports the Government of Nepal on the implementation of a project to improve the management of the Bagmati Basin. This project will study the behavior of the concerned stakeholders with the 'Political Ecology' perspective, considering river basin as a political arena.
Location & Length of service: The project takes place in the Kathmandu area (Nepal).
A minimum of 3 months of service is required and then, the length will depend on the volunteer interest and time frame. Volunteer can start as soon as possible.
Tasks & Responsibilities:We have a particular need for ensuring the field visits, through a survey (the survey aim to identify the history and the current situation of water governance/maintenance, water allocation/right and water use conflicts. It focuses on individual among farmers and other water users such as industries).
- To be in charge of the field survey: collect and analyze testimony, record data and consolidate activity reports.
- To organize and attends to meetings with local representatives of government and community.
- To establish and maintain a communication network with local/government authorities, farmers and factories.
- To assist the main coordinator to check recorded data and to provide data analysis.
- To take part in the monthly team’s meeting.
Our requirements:Good communication skills:- Be able to engage with local community members and project’s partners.
- Language skills: Strong & fluent in English (high level of writing).
- Interpersonal skills, flexibility and autonomy.
Qualification & previous experience:- Degrees or relevant combination of experience in water & sanitation or associated disciplines.
- Understanding and knowledge of topics related to water such as: urban issues, irrigation water management, drinking water use patterns, sanitation approaches.
Status: Agreement: Voluntary service.
Working day/time: The program and time schedule will be planed on arrival with the volunteer. The position is flexible between field and office.
Facilities: During its working time, volunteer will be cover for all charges (transportation, mobile communication and lunch). Currently, we are not able to cover accommodation & food, travel expenses & visa. However, compensation will be reviewed according to the project’s budget.
Notes that this position takes place in a friendly environment, that’s why we will ensure a comfortable placement in home stay family, and guide volunteer effectively all along the mission.
