I was forwarded a link to this fantastic website / resource for people wanting to volunteer in developing countries worldwide.
I think they're still in the early stages of development as I can only find volunteer options in Fiji, however well worth a look.
They seem to provide an alternative to the many expensive international voluntary agencies, instead they "cut out the middleman" by offering direct communication with organizations.
A friend of mine volunteered in Fiji through the info he found on this website. It even gives GPS coordinates which he said really helped him find the place.
