Hello, it's nice to be here, this is my first post here.
As a person interested in helping out via a volunteer program in a part of the world where it is needed, i'd like to ask a question:
I've been looking for volunteering opportunities around the internet and i keep finding a lot of organizations which require fees from you, and this puzzles me. I mean i can understand small NGOs not being able to pay your volunteer work, or even provide food/lodging on account of not having all that many resources to work with, but paying for the privilege to help out? It seems wrong, condescending even; this is because whereas before you were working to help a fellow group of people stricken with disaster and/or poverty, now it suddenly turns into a tourist affair where you pay for the privilege of roleplaying a volunteer for as long as you like, all at your convenience.
Note: not talking here about the gigs where you pay for your own food/lodging (either on your own or set up by the org) but those where they ask for fees on top of that.
Maybe i'm wrong, so i'd like to get your perspectives. Should volunteering orgs ever charge you like this? If so when?
